We help companies reduce the cost, risk and complexity associated to software licensing. In other words, we help them identify false and accidental usage, prevent audit exposure and fix issues before they become real problems. And we do that by leveraging the power of data and, by implementing new and existing technologies in a novel way.
With Licenseware we solve complex problems using a modular approach, and that enables us to offer a flexible business model, accessible for both small and large organisations. The cost saving opportunities and/or risk avoidance opportunities are massive for most companies.
Our vision is to create the first open license management app ecosystem and to make Software Asset Management (SAM) a commodity.
Our mission is to grow our app ecosystem and foster a community focused on collaboration. Ultimately, we’d like to make the industry exciting for all kinds of smart people.
Tell us about yourself?
I’ve been active in the software world since I started my career as an Analyst back in 2011. Had various roles with a focus on software asset management, data analytics, and software development. Walked in the shoes of an analyst, auditor, advisor, and software engineer being involved in building SAM tools.
In 2020 I got in touch with a former colleague (Ciprian, original founder & CTO) and old friend who came to me with an interesting idea and a prototype close to MVP stage. I thought that this is the change I wanted to see in the industry, and we started building Licenseware ever since.
Chris (co-founder & CSO) joined a bit later in 2021, to make our combo complete. Our vision deeply resonated with him and it din’t take long to convince him to take the plunge. We’re happy he did as we complete each other and together we have the right set of skills to take on this epic saga.
What is the inspiration behind your business?
After years of analysing big data manually, and after creating smaller scale automation to make our life easier, and also after helping build other SAM tools, this was the obvious next step for us.
We’re basically automating the most tedious parts of the work we used to do in our old jobs as SAM specialists. Thus we’re helping our fellow industry professionals (i.e. service providers) become more efficient and helping their companies streamline and reduce operational cost.
Virtually any other company with high software spent can benefit from our solutions.
What is your magic sauce?
We get asked this question often, and we like to make a simple analogy to explain it. While the rest of the industry is building tools, we’re building a toolbox. A open toolbox where everyone gets to monetise their existing tools and or use their knowledge and expertise to build a one (using our framework). We believe that the SAM technology of the future is an open ecosystem, not a closed monolith. It’s the collective work of thousands of experts, turning their knowledge into algorithms and data structures. That’s what we’re building. And people are catching on to this, and the reactions are great.
Where do you see your company going in 5 years time?
5 years from now we’d like Licenseware to be for SAM tooling how the App Store is for iOS apps.
What has been your biggest setback so far?
We’ve lost so many battles because we always aim so high. But we learn a lot from it. The important part is that we always know what our true north, and always come back to our values and culture.
What is the next big challenge for your business?
Achieving the velocity and growth we need to push out all the product we have on our roadmap. There’s so many great things we want to build, scaling is really essential for us.
