Efficient Drones for Commercial Use

FIXAR is a software and design developer of commercial autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for industrial applications. The company holds a unique patented design that is simpler and more reliable than other configurations. FIXAR key assets are the full stack autonomous drone technologies, including proprietary Autopilot, xGroundControl Software, aerodynamic design, BlackBox system.

Tell us about yourself?

My name is Vasily, I’m the founder and CEO of FIXAR. For myself, it’s been a natural progression. Early on, I developed a passion for building and flying model aircraft. Learning first the basics and then more advanced aerodynamics spurred me to begin pushing technological and design envelopes. I even developed and sold a popular radio-controlled aircraft model kit.

My university major in applied mathematics, along with a background in IT, allowed me to also work on software development. So far, I have managed to develop four serial UAVs and world-class sports aviation models and become a European aeronautic modelers champion in the Air Combat category. Apart from driving my business, I teach students how to build and operate drones.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

Over the course of a decade of working in the commercial drone industry with mining, surveying, oil & gas, and energy clients, I was constantly facing the same issue – the existing solutions couldn’t fulfill all the clients’ needs.

Professionals are forced to put up with functional limitations such as limited flight distance, the complexity of cumbersome configuration, small payload capacity, failure to work in low or high temperatures. Then we started to work on FIXAR 007, it is designed to fill the gap in the industry by offering an all-in-one solution for multiple use cases.

The UAV’s aerodynamics and construction led to longer flight time, heavier payloads leading to increased sensor quality capacity, increased stability in adverse weather conditions, ability to take off and land vertically from complex terrains.

Also, we focused on the development of our own technologies that can be applied to the future models – proprietary Autopilot, xGroundControl software, and BlackBox data logging system.

What is your magic sauce?

Our team has broad experience and deep knowledge in engineering, aircraft modeling and software development. This, together with understanding of the drone industry and needs of industries we serve, allows to translate these needs into ready product developed in-house.

I also see passion of our team through their activities outside daily work – organization and participation in the aircraft competitions, taking part in shaping industry by taking part in the industry relevant associations, and teaching youth about drones and how to build them.

Where do you see your company going in 5 years time?

In upcoming years FIXAR will develop new and upgrade current unmanned aerial solutions following the problems to be solved for the end users in diverse industries. We are also working on development and expansion of our in-house laboratory to carry out precise tests for our aircrafts. We will continue to scale our business globally to ensure easy access to our products around the world.

It is estimated that by 2025 drone industry will reach US$42.8 billion – that is almost double in comparison to 2020. This means that we will have a lot of work, and we are ready to work.

What has been your biggest setback so far?

One of the setbacks is the development speed of the regulations in the industry. The drone industry is developing so fast that at some points it is limited by regulatory aspects, which are not yet developed for specific applications or mission forms. Industry requires high safety standards and control, meaning huge regulatory work and implementation.

What is the next big challenge for your business?

We see that the industry requires solutions for longer-range flights, heavier payloads, and secure solutions that can comply with requirements for flights beyond visual line of sight. We take these aspects into account, – we are currently working on the next autonomous UAV solution FIXAR 025, which will deliver increased flight distance up to 300 km and carry a heavier payload of up to 10 kg.

How do people get involved/buy into your vision?

We’re interested in working together with businesses that utilize UAV solutions for mapping, surveying, video monitoring, scanning, and more. We are also open to collaborating on pilot projects to discover new segments and applications.
