Marta Recasens: Network of Urban Transport Stations That Allows Electric Charging, Secure Parking for Bicycles and Scooters

VadeCity is a network of urban transport stations that allows electric charging, secure parking for bicycles and scooters. We offer smart mobility solutions to companies, municipalities and citizens.

Our mission is to implement “Intelligent Nodes” (Stations) capable of generating services linked to mobility for the benefit of citizens generating economic activity. We face the new mobility from sustainability. Our goal is to become a benchmark for intelligent and sustainable mobility.

Tell us about yourself?

VadeCity is a project that started one day when I went to UPC (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) by bike, as usual. I am a professor in this university, so I went to my class. But once I came back to where I parked my bike, it was gone!

I am pretty sure this is an increasingly common problem, with the exponential growth of micromobility. Even back then, bikes were a really popular form of transportation. So I asked myself: is it possible to offer a safe solution to park my bike without having to worry about the possibility of getting it stolen? It was then when I promised myself that I would work to find the solution that would solve this issue and I’ve been working on it since then.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

Our inspiration is smart cities, the possibility of living in sustainable cities, designed for people. In recent years, the growth of micromobility transportation networks has resulted in an increase in theft and vandalism. Vandalism and theft are persistent problems.

vadeCity offers two types of solutions to this problem. First, for citizens and businesses, we respond to the problem of bicycle/scooter theft in cities. Secondly, for public institutions, we help to organize and manage public space in cities with smart street furniture specially designed to optimize spaces.

What is your magic sauce?

We offer the safest parking option, for an affordable price and also doesn’t take up much space. We are working on our new software, so it can be a smart parking network that creates data through the IoT sensors of the vadeBikes that are connected in Google Cloud. This data will be stored in a database and will help the users to optimize their transportation, like knowing which streets are less congested, and will also be useful for both companies and cities to improve their mobility services.

Also, we bet on the growth of all kinds of micromobilty. Our new hybrid model can park both bikes and scooters, electric or not. It’s a solution for all micromobility operators: private, sharing, rental vehicles or public or private spaces.

Where do you see your company going in 5 years time?

Our vision is to become a benchmark in transforming cities into sustainable cities at the service of people.
We plan to expand to other cities in Spain (Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Bilbao, Palma de Mallorca, Zaragoza) and to 4 other European cities (to be selected) in the next 5 years.

On the other hand, in the coming months we will finish developing the technological platform with IoT technology in the cloud with Google Cloud. This will allow us to incorporate Big Data technology throughout the existing infrastructure.

What has been your biggest setback so far?

Investment has been the biggest challenge that we had to overcome. To be able to advance with our intensive scale-up phase, proper funding is necessary so we can continue without any other setbacks and reach new markets in other countries. It is also relevant so we can keep improving the infrastructure and create a reliable service with the latest technological advances.

What is the next big challenge for your business?

One of the most important challenges for this industry is the rapid growth of micromobility after the pandemic. For example, in Spain alone, in the months following the pandemic, more than one million new users of electric bikes and scooters joined the industry.

This growth means that companies involved in urban micromobility must constantly innovate and adapt to new situations. And in fact, this was the most important reason why we are developing Big Data and sensor technology in our parking lots.

How do people get involved/buy into your vision?

We are available for anybody who is aligned with our vision of creating a new sustainable mobility system for the cities of the future. You can find us on our webpage (, where you can find all our contact information, and social media (LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter). Anyone who’s interested is welcome to talk to us!
