Measurlabs provides laboratory analyses and testing services for all kinds of materials and products. They combine the best methods from hundreds of laboratories in one service and make it incredibly easy to buy laboratory analyses for complicated materials and products.
Tell us a bit about yourself and how Measurlabs got started?
The two founders of Measurlabs, our COO Kalle Lagerblom and I, met when we studied chemistry at the University of Helsinki. After graduating as Masters of Organic Chemistry we both continued to work on our PhD’s. We needed all kinds of measurements to determine the properties of the materials and molecules we made, so we started keeping a record where certain measurements are available.
People began to turn to us when they needed to find a place for their analysis needs. First it was just acquaintances at the university, but after the word spread, a few companies asked for help from us when they needed laboratory measurements. That’s when we started to see business potential in mediating laboratory analyses, and Measurlabs was founded.
What is the problem or challenge you are solving?
As we have searched for laboratories for our clients’ needs, we have noticed how difficult it can be to find the right laboratory for the analysis you need. Especially if the analysis requested is a bit more unusual, you might need to do a lot of research to find a lab that actually can perform the measurement. Secondly, the prices can also vary a lot between different labs, so it’s important to compare the offers from several places.
Busy professionals who develop products or materials in a company may not have time, or the experience, to find and buy laboratory analyses. That’s why we want to make it easy and effortless to buy any kind of testing service. We want to enable our clients to get all their analyses easily from one place, instead of having to use hours on googling for laboratories and sending emails back and forth. Looking at the feedback we get from our current clients, we seem to be doing quite a good job at that. Many of them have started ordering all their analyses from us because “it’s just so easy”.
How are you doing things differently than your competition?
First of all, we can literally offer all different testing services from one place. Secondly, we make the purchase process incredibly easy for our customers: they do not need to search for laboratories, compare offers, or think of how to ship their samples for example to laboratories in foreign countries. All they need to do is tell us what they need, and we take care of everything else, all the way to reporting the analysis results in a clear and understandable format.
Another thing that I also want to point out is that we are publishing many of our measurement services on our website so that their prices and turnaround times are available to everyone. This goes together with our mission to make it as easy and straightforward as possible to buy measurement services.
How has the business grown since you first started?
When we started back in 2017 it was just me and Kalle and a single excel sheet, but now we have a team of 12 people, all experts in their own fields. Our goal is to have specialists from all industries and measurement techniques, so that we can offer help and expertise to all our clients about how they can get the information they need about their materials.
This year has been about taking our business to a whole new level: we doubled our team from 6 to 12, our revenue from 348 k€ to 800 k€, got an investor on board and have entered five new international markets. Lifeline Ventures, who has previously invested in success stories like Wolt, Supercell and Swappie, invested 500k in us to enable us to reach our growth targets faster.
What are your plans for the future?
To make it even easier to buy simple measurement services, we are working on turning our website into an eCommerce store so that people can not only see the prices, but also directly order the measurements online. Of course some cases require input from our experts or the customer doesn’t know yet which specific measurement will give them the information they need. In those cases, our experts will always be there to help in making a suitable testing plan.
